Meet the author - Karen Le Grange
Fall in love with the magic of our South African wildlife and their adventures! I am so immensely proud to be the author and illustrator of this series - as I have always had a love for nature - ranging from the big to the small (especially within South Africa)!
Most storybooks featuring our animals are not specifically South African, and rarely do they highlight the lesser known animals, birds, bugs, etc. I take inspiration from my own garden, adventures throughout South Africa, childhood memories and African fables passed down, by local people, through generations.
I do hope you enjoy reading these stories to your children (there will be many more to come!), they may just learn something new - and maybe you will too!
The Elephant's Itchy Toe
The go-away bird attempts to rescue the stubborn elephant from a horrible itch…however, this iconic South African bird is overlooked due to her small size.

Colourful illustrations with many hidden creatures for young and old to find throughout the book.
I am very grateful to have recently been interviewed by 2 local magazines. These are some of the questions I was asked, and these will hopefully give you more background on the books :)
In your opinion, what sets your books apart from other children’s books? - We are very lucky to have such a wide array of kids books, however, Little SAfari Books highlight our local creatures – big and small – specifically from South Africa.
Little SAfari Books have some wonderful life lessons beneath the surface (for young and old alike). I wish I applied some of these to my life a long time ago! With 3 colourful titles out so far, there is lots to learn!
What inspired you to start this book series, and how did the idea become reality? - I adore reading books…especially to my little ones, as you get to cuddle close, sit still (or so we hope) and enjoy an adventure together. I have always been creative and after reading daily to my kids for many years, discovered many books are complicated or don’t hold the interest of my little ones.
Future plans for the series? - I am so grateful for the local support I have received thus far, and I would love to have my books in libraries across the country. I am also hoping to appeal to the large numbers of people who have moved overseas – parents and grandparents who miss all the animals, birds and bugs they grew up with. I have huge amounts of crazy ideas for future stories, so I plan on writing many, many more exciting adventures for all ages locally and all over the world!
